Ixkara the Adventurous Vizcacha Series
BioDiversiCuentos Collection

“Ixkara, the Adventurous Vizcacha” is the first picture book series in the BioDiversiCuentos Collection.

Ixkara’s adventures unfold across the High Andean ecosystems, including the puna grasslands, inter-Andean valleys, and high-altitude dry forests, drawing inspiration from the extraordinary natural and cultural heritage of Toro Toro National Park and its surrounding landscapes. Through each story, readers journey across remarkable scenery, encounter iconic plant and animal species, explore essential ecological processes, and discover the unique communities and destinations that make this region so special.

One of the defining features of the series is the quality of its illustrations. Every plant and animal species is illustrated through careful observation and research, achieving a balance between the accuracy of scientific illustration and the warmth, expressiveness, and charm of children’s picture-book art. This approach transforms each book into both an engaging artistic experience and a reliable resource for learning about biodiversity.

“Ixkara, the Adventurous Vizcacha” also serves as the pilot project for the BioDiversiCuentos Collection. Through this first series, we are developing, testing, and refining an innovative editorial model that brings together scientific rigor, literary storytelling, and specialized natural history illustration within the picture book format. Our goal is to create books that inspire curiosity, foster a meaningful connection with nature, and encourage children and families to appreciate and protect biodiversity through stories that are both scientifically grounded and emotionally engaging.

Ixkara loves to sunbathe on her rocky outcrop

Synopsis

On the vast, cold plains of the Bolivian Altiplano lives Ixkara, a young, curious, and brave male viscacha. He enjoys playing with his family and friends, basking in the sun on his rocky outcrop, and exploring

His peaceful life is disrupted by loud and disturbing noises, forcing the group of viscachas to make the difficult decision to leave their home. Ixkara sets out on an adventurous journey in search of a new place to live — a journey that will lead her to the breathtaking landscapes of Toro Toro.

During her journey, Ixkara encounters her enemy, the Andean fox, but she also makes new friends and discovers beautiful places along the way. After a long and challenging path, he finally arrives in Toro Toro — a peaceful, rocky landscape inhabited by a welcoming community of viscachas and people who live in harmony with nature.

At the end of his journey, while resting under the warm sun on his new rocky home, Ixkara begins to imagine his next adventure in this wonderful new world he has discovered.

The Andean fox sees Ixkara as prey.
