Capturing the charm and delicacy of the vicuña
The vicuña, the character who encourages and supports Ixkara the vizcacha throughout his journey, is undoubtedly one of the most iconic animals of the Andean ecosystems. With its long legs and exceptionally fine, highly prized fleece, it stands out among the South American camelids. While illustrating this character, I sought to capture the elegance, gentleness, and grace that make the vicuña so distinctive.
The vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) is a wild South American camelid that inhabits the high-altitude Andes of Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador. In Bolivia, it is found mainly in the departments of La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro, Potosí, and Tarija. It is the smallest of the South American camelids and is recognized by its slender body, long legs, and beautiful beige and cinnamon-colored coat, which produces one of the finest natural fibers in the world (MMAyA, 2018).
For centuries—perhaps even millennia—the extraordinary fiber of the vicuña has been sustainably used by Andean communities. However, following the Spanish conquest, this use became intensive exploitation, bringing the species to the brink of extinction. In response, several conservation initiatives were established across its range during the last decades. Thanks to these collaborative efforts, the vicuña is no longer considered endangered, although it still requires ongoing protection and conservation to ensure the survival of its populations (Franklin et al., 2018).
This remarkable story of resilience inspired the design of the vicuña in Ixkara. Beyond accurately portraying its anatomy, we wanted to emphasize the qualities that make this species unforgettable: the softness and texture of its fleece, its delicate beige and warm cinnamon tones, and its elegant posture. Every detail of the illustration is intended to inspire curiosity, admiration, and respect for an animal whose recovery demonstrates that conservation is possible when people and nature work together in harmony.
El encanto y la delicadeza de la vicuña plasmado en su ilustración
La vicuña, personaje que ayuda y ánima a Ixkara la vizcacha, es indudablemente uno de los animales más emblemáticos de los ecosistemas andinos. La vicuña (Vicugna vicugna) es un camélido silvestre que habita los ecosistemas altoandinos de Bolivia, Perú, Chile, Argentina y Ecuador. En Bolivia se distribuye principalmente en los departamentos de La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro, Potosí y Tarija. Es el camélido sudamericano de menor tamaño y se distingue por su cuerpo esbelto, sus largas patas y su característico pelaje de tonos beige y canela, considerado una de las fibras naturales más finas del mundo (MMAyA, 2018). La fibra de la lana de la vicuña está entre las más finas del mundo, y esta ha sido aprovechada desde hace cientos, sino es que miles de años, pero fue a partir de la conquista española que este aprovechamiento se transformó en explotación, y casi lleva a esta especie a la extinción. Como respuesta a ello, en las últimas décadas, que se establecieron varias estrategias de conservación de esta especie a lo largo de su rango de distribución, gracias a ello la vicuña ya no está considerada en peligro de extinción, sin embargo, requiere aún esfuerzos de cuidado y conservación (Franklin et al., 2018). Esta historia de resiliencia inspiró el diseño de la vicuña en Ixkara. Más allá de representar fielmente su anatomía, buscamos destacar aquello que la hace única: la suavidad y textura de su pelaje, sus delicados tonos beige-anaranjados y su elegante porte. Cada detalle de la ilustración pretende despertar la curiosidad y el aprecio de los lectores por una especie que demuestra que la conservación es posible cuando las personas y la naturaleza trabajan en armonía.
