Creando el personaje de Ixkara al vizcacha
Soy Pedro Huayllas, el ilustrador que diseñó a Ixkara la vizcacha. En esta nota te contaré mi proceso creativo y cómo paulatinamente Ixkara fue tomando vida. ¿Cómo fue mi primer encuentro con una vizcacha?
Ser parte del equipo de ilustradores del primer libro álbum de la serie Ixkara la vizcacha, fue una gran aventura para mí. Las ilustraciones están inspiradas en una primera foto que obtuve de una vizcacha en Toro Toro el 2017, ahí conocí que los grandes roquedales presentes en este Parque Nacional estaban habitados por estos simpáticos animalitos.
Cuando ví por primera vez a esta vizcacha me pareció ver a un conejo, pero al observar la peculiar cola, se me hizo maravillosa, no era para nada un conejo, era una especie que no conocía en absoluto. Investigando más adelante, aprendí que a pesar de su similitud con los conejos, las vizcachas tienen una relación evolutiva más cercana a las ardillas y capibaras que con liebres y conejos.
La vizcacha de la foto tenía un pelaje con llamativos colores… plomizo y un naranja muy vivo que llamó mucho mi atención. Ambos colores inspiraron al personaje de Ixkara y sus amigos.
Creating Ixkara, the adventurous vizcacha
Being part of the illustration team for the first picture book in the Ixkara the Adventurous Vizcacha series has been a wonderful adventure for me
The illustrations were inspired by the first photograph I ever took of a vizcacha in Toro Toro, in 2017. It was there that I discovered that the impressive rocky landscapes of this National Park were home to these charming little animals.
When I first saw this vizcacha, I thought I was looking at a rabbit. But as soon as I noticed its peculiar tail, I was fascinated. It was not a rabbit at all, but a species I had never encountered before. Through further research, I learned that, despite their resemblance to rabbits, vizcachas are evolutionarily more closely related to squirrels and capybaras than to hares and rabbits.
The vizcacha in the photograph had a striking coat with beautiful tones — a soft gray and a vivid orange that immediately caught my attention. These two colors became the inspiration for Ixkara and her friends, bringing their personalities and appearance to life.
